The school is designed around a mix of the Middle School and Junior High School philosophies, providing a sound, well thought out pedagogy and a strong curriculum focus for students of all ages.
AJHS is designed philosophically and structurally to identify and cater specifically for, the needs of the emerging adolescent. Therefore, it is vital that staff, students and parents are able to articulate our vision for it pervades every aspect of what we do as a school in terms of catering for individuals and in improving teaching and learning.
We understand that students come in all shapes and sizes and of varying abilities. Although students may not all reach the same standards, they should be encouraged to strive to improve and attain challenging, yet realistic goals.
At Albany Junior High we provide an effective learning support program that caters for the full range of learning needs, from those requiring additional support, to stimulating the gifted and talented students in our school. We acknowledge and celebrate those who succeed and reward students in all areas of endeavour.
Our students are nurtured and encouraged to do the very best that they can in all fields of endeavour, and we provide a comprehensive range of extra curricular activities for them to participate in. Sports and the Performing Arts are particular strengths and areas of excellence for our community.
Our pastoral care is organised around the Whanau or Vertical House system that will provide multiple opportunities for support and leadership, particularly for Year 10 students, fulfilling our philosophy of “education for democracy”.
It is crucial that students perform well in preparation for the qualification based years of their education which lie ahead. Students will therefore undertake NCEA standards and be gaining credits by the end of Year 10 and so will be well on their way to gaining topclass results in the National Certificates.
