Update from the Health Clinic regarding Alert Level 1
The Ministry of Health have advised that the risk of community transmission of COVID -19 is low. However it’s still important to keep in mind that COVID-19 is uncontrolled in many areas overseas, and we should not be complacent because COVID-19 can spread quickly if it re-emerges.
Please be vigilant and if your child is unwell, please keep them home from school. We know how frustrating it is to be called from work to collect an unwell child but we are obliged to send any students home who show any symptoms of a cold or flu.
a high temperature of at least 38°C
shortness of breath
sneezing and runny nose
temporary loss of smell.
These symptoms don’t necessarily mean you have COVID-19.
The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu but it is important that you discuss this with your GP or Healthline on 0800 358 5453 to determine if you need testing.

Changes to the School Gym

We are also working towards replacing the Gym floors which will be completed over the July holidays.
Year 10 Social Sciences
Our Year 10 Students got to understand Human Rights first hand last week when they connected online for a live interview with a young man from Rwanda. Four of our students, Maia Tabuteau, Paris McDonald, Emma McKinney and Kasey Hawthorn pre-interviewed Clement the previous week and led the interview for our Year 10’s using Google Meet which we had become familiar with during lockdown.
Students were astounded to learn about how someone can grow up having never used soap or a toothbrush, having to walk 7kms to fetch water and having to dig a hole each time for the toilet. They were astounded to learn that children grow up having never owned a pair of shoes. Students reported back that hearing it on TV was a whole lot different to hearing this first hand from a person they were connecting with on the other side of the world.
We are grateful to the parents and students who took the time to participate in this unique learning experience.
Science Roadshow visit
All Year 8 classes had the opportunity to visit the Science Roadshow when it came to AJHS this week.
Students were treated to a show that included vacuum packing a teacher, and a chemical reaction that filled four glasses with cola in four seconds.
Students then had time to explore 30 “hands on” displays.
AJHS flash drive design competition
Well done to Zoe Feng of 9T2 who is the winner of the AJHS Flash Drive Design Competition!

Sport is back and we are pretty excited about it!!
What’s been happening?
Over the past couple of weeks we have had our Year 9 and 10’s back in action in basketball, football and netball, and our hockey teams have started some friendly games this week.
We held our own Year 7 netball afternoon on Tuesday where our Year 7 teams had the opportunity to take to the court and get some practice games in before the season starts for them in Term 3. The Year 8’s will have their opportunity to do the same this Thursday.
A number of our Year 10 Leaders have put together a fantastic intra school 5 aside football tournament which kicked off on Tuesday lunchtime. There are over 90 students involved so a special thanks to Mr Callon, Kendall, Rachel and Sam for making this happen.
Term 3 is looking to be a busy term with all winter codes getting into action in either week 1 or week 2 as well as a number of zone days.
Sports Information: Sport now has a tab on the new look AJHS website. Some information is still being updated but each week we will share all AJHS team draws under the Sports Draw tab. https://www.ajhs.school.nz/sports-draws/

The following Sports Registrations close in the next few days so if your child is wanting to play any of the following sports please ensure that these registrations are completed over the weekend. Please click on the appropriate link for information and also to register your child.
Rugby Year 9 and 10 Boys A few local clubs are looking to put together a social rugby competition for Year 9 and 10 boys that are not playing rugby this year, but maybe interested in playing a game on a Saturday with other boys of similar age.
