English

English is a core subject at AJHS. This means it is compulsory for all year 9’s and 10’s.

In years 9 and 10, students are expected to focus less on concrete ideas and more on developing critical thinking and being able to make connections between abstract ideas. We do this through the analysis of a variety of text types.

The subject of English is all about communication and it is divided into 6 strands which include reading, writing, speaking, listening, presenting, and viewing. All of these skills are developed in a variety of ways throughout the year.

Assessments are both formative and summative.

Year 9 & 10 Options

Year 9 Film Studies

In Film Studies, students analyse the language of film.  They examine how filmmakers use film techniques to set tone and mood and to relay both direct and subliminal messages to their audience. Film techniques include camera angles, shot types, use of colour, music, sound effects, lighting, costumes and set design.

Year 10 Media Studies

This course familiarises students with the power of media and its main purpose of mass communication.  Students are given the opportunity to examine a wide variety of media types and how each one can be used in a unique way for specific purposes.
