Last week the final group of environmental science students planted native trees at the Rosedale Regeneration Project.

The group planted 90 trees (on top of the previous plantings from other students), and then had fun making and launching seed bombs around the site. The seed bombs spread cover crop seeds which will grow rapidly and help to shade the new trees and retain soil moisture.

Students also helped out with a new initiative to layer unprocessed wool around the base of the young trees. The wool will act as a mulch, and also add nutrients to the soil as it decays. We hope that will help our trees survive the forecasted hot, dry Auckland summer linked to a strong El Nino this year.
