Over the last fortnight, our Year 7s swapped the classroom for the canopy as they headed to Tree Adventures in paired classes. The trip wasn’t just about the thrill of the climb; it was a powerful exploration of Motuhaketanga. Motuhaketanga, at its essence, is independence, self-determination, and taking responsibility for one’s own journey.
High above the ground, students were challenged to push themselves out of their comfort zones. At AJHS we encourage ‘challenge by choice’. Whether it was navigating a wobbling path high in the pines or tackling a daunting vertical ladder, it was inspiring to see them push past “I can’t” to “I did.”
Success wasn’t just an individual feat. Working alongside their peers, students practiced being their best selves by offering encouragement, coaching each other through tricky obstacles, and celebrating every small victory. The grit displayed and laughter heard throughout the woods showed just how much our Year 7s have grown.
A huge thank you to all the parents who gave up their time so these trips could go ahead. We can’t offer these experiences without parent support, and we are truly grateful. We are delighted with the spirit and resilience shown by participants across the trips.
