Our Year 9 Hard Materials class has been exploring the exciting possibilities of our new laser cutter, combining modern technology with traditional casting techniques. As part of a unit focused on Māori-inspired jewellery, students designed intricate patterns and used the laser cutter to create precise wooden moulds for pewter casting.
This hands-on process not only helped students develop their design and CAD (computer-aided design) skills, but also gave them the chance to experience the transformation of metal from molten pewter to polished jewellery. From initial sketches to the final wearable piece, each student brought their own creativity and cultural understanding to the project.
The introduction of the laser cutter has opened up new pathways for learning and innovation in the workshop, and the results speak for themselves, beautiful, meaningful pieces that students are proud to call their own.
