Malo e lelei, warm greetings everyone.

This week AJHS enjoyed celebrating Tongan Language Week – a special time to celebrate the language, culture and proud heritage of Tonga.

Ko hoku hingoa ko Elisi. Ko hoku hingoa ko Fehi.

Our names’ are Fehi and Elisi Tupouto’a and we are sisters and students at AJHS. Oku mau hau mei Vaini mo Ngele’ia – We come from the villages of Vaini and Ngelei’a in Tonga.

Here are some interesting facts we’d like to share with you about Tonga:

  • The Kingdom of Tonga is known for being the last remaining monarchy in the Pacific.

  • Tonga has 171 islands, with 45 of them inhabited.

  • Tonga’s flag has a cross of red as a symbol of the deep-rooted Christian religion in the country.

  • In Tonga it is illegal to conduct business, play sports,or do chores on Sundays, reflecting the country’s strong religious values.

The theme for Tongan Language Week 2025 was “Ko etau lea; ko e fe’unu; Mahu’inga ia ki he mo’ui ‘a e Tonga”. “Our language is a vital strand of our Tongan culture”.
