Last week, the 2026 Student Leaders attended leadership camp at the Pinnacles in the Coromandel. I believe leadership camp was a valuable opportunity for all of us to learn, grow, and reflect in a completely different environment.
Our journey started from school with a two-hour car ride, which was full of excitement as we joked and listened to music. It was a calm start – a big contrast to the challenge that awaited us: the four-hour hike up to the hut, with an elevation of 582 metres. The hike was steep, exhausting, and physically demanding, especially while carrying a heavy pack. But with accompaniment from my fellow student leaders, we pushed through and reached the hut.
After arriving and settling in, we had a chance to relax. That night, we listened to speeches from our peers, which were inspiring, and allowed everyone to voice their ideas. Throughout the camp, we cooked our own meals and were responsible for bringing all our food and equipment up the mountain.
Early on the second day we walked up to the summit. Although this hike was more strenuous than the climb to the hut, we were relieved not to be carrying any packs. The view from the top was breathtaking and made every steep step worth it.
Later that day we tackled team-building activities, learned about different leadership styles, brainstormed events for the year ahead, and listened to all the remaining speeches.
On the final day we woke up early to begin our descent. Time passed quickly as we spent the morning talking and enjoying time together. On the way back, we stopped in Thames at the local bakery, which was a perfect treat after a great trip.
By the end of the camp, I felt exhausted but also grateful for the opportunity AJHS had given us. Leadership camp was an unforgettable experience that challenged us, taught us new skills, and strengthened our friendships.
