EOTC
Taking students beyond the classroom walls to learn has always been a part of the AJHS philosophy. All years take part in annual camps, whether it’s camping at Shakespear Regional Park, kayaking and hiking on Kawau Island, learning life skills at Totara Springs in Matamata or experiencing all the action that Lake Karapiro has to offer.
As a result of these outdoor opportunities, students create lifelong friendships, learn resilience and patience, discover abilities they might never have known they had, and create memories that will help shape their view of the world.
Class groups also regularly go on day trips around Auckland for subjects such as Geography, Humanities, Science, and Sports Academy. Recent day trips have included the Marine Education and Recreation Centre at Long Bay, The Museum, Tiritiri Matangi, Surf Camp, Stardome Observatory and Planetarium, Auckland University Medical School, and much more.
International school trips have seen AJHS students visit NASA in Houston Texas, explore the history of France, and experience sports exchanges in Australia.
Goals of the EOTC Programme
- To provide a vehicle for the students to learn more about each other and to understand and tolerate our differences. As a result of these camps we find students make unexpected friendships.
- To give the students opportunities to increase their self esteem, to develop leadership skills and teamwork skills.
- To give knowledge of the risks one might encounter in the outdoors and develop the skills to cope with them
We look to provide a camp for each year level, every year
Year 7 Camp
Year 8 Camp
Year 8 Camp is situated at Totara Springs- Matamata. Situated in a beautiful setting at the foot of the Kaimai ranges. There are 90 acres of park-like grounds and native bush with streams, walks and bush trails. Included is a large gymnasium for indoor sports, as well as a large hot pool fed by natural hot water.
Year 9 Camp
Year 9 Camp is located on Kawau Island. Students continue to develop their leadership skills whilst learning about the New Zealand environment and the skills required to live in it.
Year 10 Camp
Year 10 Camp usually takes place early in Term 2 and is our only camp where all students attend together. A great way to conclude their final year at AJHS.
Year 10 Leadership Camp
Year 10 Leadership Camp takes place before the start of the school year and sets the new leader up with an amazing platform to take on the exciting challenges they will face throughout the year.
