Sports to get involved in at AJHS

Badminton

Badminton is a growing sport at AJHS and is enjoyed by students from years 7-10. Students do not have to have any experience in badminton to get involved. There are opportunities for both experienced and beginners to take part in both the badminton club and the competitive competition.

Badminton Club

Our badminton club is an opportunity for students to play badminton in a relaxed and fun environment. Rackets are provided for those that do not have their own. 
The term 1 badminton club is starting in week 6. There will be an option for students to choose one of 2 days to attend.
 
Monday –  Starting 4th of March 2024 and is held weekly until Monday 8th of April 2024. There is no session on the 1st of April due to Easter. (5 sessions)
or
Thursday – Starting 7th of March and is held weekly until Thursday the 4th of April 2024 (5 sessions)
 

Registrations are now being taken for the term 1 badminton club. Registration forms are available on the Sports Registration page.

Competitions

We enter teams in the Badminton North Harbour Intermediate and Junior College Competitions which are played in term 3. The venue for the competition is either Badminton North Harbour, located in Bond Crescent, Foresthill, or at Active Badminton located in Apollo Drive, Mairangi Bay. This is a team competition with a minimum of 4 players required for each team. Students play singles and doubles. Teams are selected from trials held at school. As we normally have a number of teams, all players that register will be selected in a team.

Games are normally played from 4 pm to 5.30 pm.

Students wishing to take part do not need experience, they just need to be keen to learn and have a racquet.

Trials

Trials for term 3 competition teams will be held in term 2. Trial dates and times will be advised to those who have registered.

Uniform

Students must practice and compete in their correct AJHS PE shirt and AJHS PE shorts. Suitable non-marking sports footwear must also be worn.

Basketball

Basketball is a growing sport in New Zealand with people of all ages being able to get involved. AJHS offer basketball for both boys and girls in year 7 to 10. We enter teams into the North Harbour Basketball Competition.

Intermediate Teams (Year 7 & 8 Students)

Intermediate basketball is played all year but split over two semesters. Students can play for just one semester or both semesters. There are separate boys and girls’ grades and we offer the opportunity for all levels of ability from beginner through to advanced players. All students that register for basketball will be placed on a team.

Competition Details:

Semester 1 (Term1 & 2) and Semester 2 (Term3 & 4).

Games are played on a Monday evening anywhere between 3.50pm pm and 9 pm.

Games are played at either the Eventfinda Stadium (Formerly North Shore Events Centre), Silverfield Lane, Glenfield or AUT, Akoranga Drive, Northcote, YMCA, Akoranga Drive or Massey University, Albany.

Costs:

Year 7 & 8 Boys & Girls Semester Registration $180.00

Compulsory Sports Admin Fee (one-off payment) $25.00

Damaged or non-returned basketball singlet $80.00

(New registrations are required for each semester)

College Teams (Year 9 & 10 students)

The college competition is played in term 2 and term 3.

We enter teams in the following grades:

Year 9 Boys, Junior Boys (Year 10), Year 9 Girls,  Junior Girls (Year 9 & 10).

Games are played at either:

Training (Year 7 to 10)

Students are expected to attend the team training each week. These could be held before or after school and will be confirmed once teams are selected and coaches appointed.

Uniform (Year 7 to 10)

AJHS PE Shorts, AJHS Basketball singlet (supplied) and appropriate non-marking sports footwear to be worn to both training and games.

Mouthguards are compulsory for all players and each player will be issued one when their singlet is issued.

Diving

 

Springboard diving has become a popular sport at AJHS with students attending weekly training sessions throughout the year. The training sessions currently take place during one of our Programme times. Students that can complete the minimum criteria will then have the opportunity to represent AJHS in the Auckland Secondary Schools Diving competition. The AJHS/ASHS Diving team has won the Auckland Secondary Schools Diving Competition for over 10 years in a row now.

Students are preselected for the diving programme but students with experience in gymnastics, dance or trampoline may also be offered the opportunity to be involved.

Football

Football is enjoyed by many of our students and staff at AJHS. We offer students in years 9 and 10 the opportunity to be a part of our College boys or girls team(s) that play in the College Sport Auckland Football Competition. We try to accommodate all players interested but this is always dependent on player numbers.

Football for year 7 and 8 students is not offered for regular season teams but we do have opportunities for zone days and tournaments such as NZ AIMS Games. Please see Sporting Opportunities and AIMS Games pages for further details.

Competition

COLLEGE (Year 9 & 10) Teams play in the College Sports Competition which is played in terms 2 and 3.

College Boys games are played on Saturday morning at either 9 am or 10 am.

College Girls play on a Wednesday after school with games starting at 4 pm.

Games are played on a home and away basis.

Training

Players selected for teams are expected to attend all training. Teams will train at least once a week, either before or after school or at lunchtime.

Details of training times will be confirmed once teams are selected and coaches confirmed.

Trials will be dependent on numbers and all registered players will be advised of trial details.

Uniform

Year 9 and 10 students are provided with an AJHS football shirt to be worn for the season.

All students must have their own AJHS PE shorts and must purchase the AJHS maroon sports socks. These must be worn for all matches. All players must have their own boots and shin pads.

Costs

College Boys & Girls (Year 9 and 10) Registration fee $125.00

AJHS Maroon sports socks (purchased from the uniform shop) $21.00

Hockey

Hockey is offered to both boys and girls in years 7 to 10. All levels of players are encouraged to play, from beginners through to experienced players. We do try to accommodate all students that register for hockey but that is always dependent on the player numbers.

We enter our teams in the Harbour Hockey competitions which are played in terms 2 and 3. Trials and trainings for the teams will start in term 1.

COLLEGE (Year 9 and 10 Boys and Girls)

Year 9 and 10 teams play in the Harbour Hockey Secondary Schools Competition during terms 2 and 3.

College boys’ games are played on a Wednesday and College girls play on a Thursday. Games are played anywhere between 4 pm and 8 pm.

Most games are played at Harbour Hockey, 159 Bush Road, Albany or Kristin School, Rangitoto College, or Westlake Girls High School. Game times and venues will be detailed on the draw each week.

 

INTERMEDIATE (Year 7 and 8 Boys and Girls)

Year 7 and 8 students play in the Harbour Hockey Kwik Sticks 7aside competition. The majority of our teams will play on a Tuesday evening but there is also an opportunity for students to play on a Monday eveing if we get sufficient interest.

Training

Players selected for teams are expected to attend all trainings. Teams will train at least once a week, normally before or after school on the school turf.

Details of training times will be confirmed once teams are selected and coaches confirmed.

Uniform

College Teams (Year 9 and 10)

Boys are provided with an AJHS hockey shirt and are required to wear their own AJHS PE shorts and the AJHS maroon sports socks.

Girls are provided with an AJHS hockey dress and must also wear the AJHS maroon sports socks.

The AJHS hockey shirts and dresses are to be returned at the conclusion of the season.

AJHS maroon sports socks are available for purchase from the AJHS uniform shop for $21.00

Sports shoes, Shin pads, Mouthguard, and Hockey Stick are required and are the responsibility of each individual player.

Intermediate Teams (Year 7 and 8)

Girls and Boys are provided with an AJHS hockey shirt for the season. They are required to wear their own AJHS PE shorts and AJHS maroon sports socks for all games.

Netball

Netball is very popular with students at AJHS. We offer students of all levels (beginner through to experienced) the opportunity to be apart of our netball programme. We have teams entered into the Netball North Harbour year 7, year 8 and college competitions. All students that register and trial for netball at AJHS will be placed in a team.

Competition

All teams play in the Netball North Harbour Competition at the Barfoot and Thompson Netball Centre, 44 Northcote Road, Takapuna

COLLEGE (Year 9 and 10) 

Teams play in the year 9-13 competition on a Saturday. Games are played between 8 am and 1 pm and are played in terms 2 and 3.

INTERMEDIATE (Year 7 and 8)

Year 7 – Teams play in terms 2 and 3 on a Tuesday between 4 pm and 8.30 pm.

Year 8 – teams play in terms 2 and 3 on a Thursday between 4 pm and 8.30 pm.

Training

All teams will have a minimum of one training per week. Training days and times will be confirmed once teams are selected and coaches appointed. Trainings may be held before school, at lunch time or after school dependent on availability of facilities and coaches.

Uniform

All girls are required to wear the AJHS Netball dress, white ankle socks and sport shoes for all games. The netball dress can be purchased from the Uniform Shop and should be organised during term 1.

Footwear

We highly recommend that you purchase footwear that is suitable for netball. Either a netball shoe or tennis shoe are the better options as offer the best support for netball players. Asics have a great range of netball shoes with different price level options.

Rugby

Rugby is offered at College (year 9 and 10) level for regular winter competition for both boys and girls grades (contact (tackle) and non contact (rip)). Year 7 and 8 students play at their local clubs but there are opportunities for them to play in the Intermediate School Zone Days and 7’s rugby festivals (See details under Sports Opportunities)

Each year our priority is to have our own AJHS team but if we don’t have sufficient numbers then we do work with surrounding schools to either have a combined team or find places in teams to ensure that players can play rugby. In the past few years, we have had a  combined team with Kristin which has enabled our students to play rugby.

Competition

Year 9 and 10 teams play in the North Harbour Rugby Secondary Schools Competition played in term 2 and 3. 

Training

It is expected that our rugby training will train twice per week. Training will be held before or after school with training days and times confirmed once teams and coaches confirmed.

Uniform

Teams will be provided with the AJHS rugby jersey for the season. Players will be supplied with AJHS rugby shorts, socks and a mouthguard as part of their registration fees. Boots and any other individual rugby-specific equipment is the responsibility of each player.

Table Tennis

Albany Junior High School has seen some very talented table tennis players over the years. The majority of league players generally already belong to a club but, new players are always welcome to join in.

Competition

INTERMEDIATE (Year 7 & 8)

Teams are entered into the North Harbour Intermediate Competition. Teams comprise mixed age groups and can be a mixture of boys and girls.

We are currently awaiting further details of the competition but it is played in terms 2 & 3.

COLLEGE (Year 9 & 10)

Teams are entered into the College Sports North Shore Secondary Schools Competition. Teams comprise mixed age groups (i.e. years 9 and 10) and can be a mixture of boys and girls.

We are currently awaiting further details of this competition.

Uniform & Equipment

All students are required to play in their AJHS PE Shirt and AJHS PE Shorts.

They need to wear sports shoes and have their own bat.

Touch Rugby

Competition

COLLEGE (Year 9 & 10)

Teams are entered into the North Harbour Junior Secondary Schools Competition. 

Games are played on a Tuesday from 4 pm at Sunnynook Park.

INTERMEDIATE (Year 7 & 8)

Teams are entered in the North Harbour Intermediate Schools Competition which is played in Term 4. Teams can be Boys, Girls, or Mixed.

Games are played on a Thursday from 4 pm at Sunnynook Park, Sunnynook.

Volleyball

Volleyball is offered for year 9 and 10 students to play in regular weekly competitions. Year 7 and 8 students get the opportunity to try volleyball on both indoor and beach volleyball zone days (see details on Zone Days page)

Teams play in the North Harbour College Volleyball Competition with games starting in late term 3 or early term 4 depending on the team.

COLLEGE A TEAMS
Entry into the following competition will be subject to player numbers and level of ability.
Students that don’t get selected for the College A-Team will be placed into the College B Team.

Water Polo

Competition

INTERMEDIATE (Year 7 & 8)

Teams are entered into the North Harbour Intermediate Water Polo Competition. Intermediate Water Polo runs throughout terms 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Year 7 and 8 teams play after school on Fridays at the AUT Millennium, 17 Antares Place, Mairangi Bay.

COLLEGE (Year 9 & 10)

Teams are entered into the North Harbour College Water Polo Competition. College Water Polo runs throughout terms 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Games are played after school on Fridays at the AUT Millennium, 17 Antares Place, Mairangi Bay

Uniform

AJHS Water Polo togs are required to be worn for all games. (Sizing for togs will be taken shortly after Sports Registration)
